  • For a Decade, Kids Have Tapped Into Their Potential at Arts 'n Motion

    When Melissa Hathway opened Arts ‘n Motion 10 years ago, West County did not have a place where music, dance and art were taught collectively. With the support of families and staff, Hathway’s business filled that void, and she is now celebrating 10 years of helping kids enjoy the arts in a fun and creative environment.

    Hathway’s passion for dance was cultivated at an early age. She danced as a 3-year-old and performed professionally as a teen. A mother of two, she launched the Odenton studio so she could encourage youth to explore their creativity in a non-competitive setting. Hathway emphasized that boys and girls taking classes at Arts ‘n Motion don’t need to have aspirations of being a professional dancer or artist to reap skills that will benefit them, regardless of which career path they choose.

    “Programs in the arts open up the experiences that kids can have in their life, helping them with self-confidence, speaking and being comfortable with who they are,” Hathway insisted. “It’s nice to see the growth children go through when they are working on something and have a goal in mind.”

    As students’ confidence has developed, so has the local business. The studio relocated in 2007 to a bigger Odenton storefront, which Hathway’s sister, Emily Miller, helped design with her husband. Over the years, Miller also has taught art classes on occasion.
